The concepts of BIM strive to the ideology of design teams working together collaboratively within 1 model across all disciplines. As fantastic as Revit has been to support architectural design delivery, the realities of this are not quite there yet when projects reach a certain scale or teams are to be spread across geographical locations. This class isn’t looking to solve all these challenges, but will highlight the different approaches that CallisonRTKL has learnt from experience having worked with Revit technologies since as early as 2003 globally and in the UK since 2006. We will also highlight other applications that we are using to address some of these challenges such as Windows Remote Desktop, Cisco Xen App, and Collaboration for Revit with A360.

Andrew is a design technology manager responsible for a global team of design technology specialists. Together they are responsible for the staff training, support, and implementation of BIM projects throughout CallisonRTKL within the areas of process and technologies. Andrew has over 9 years of experience within the role of a firm-wide BIM manager assessing, validating, and coordinating the delivery of BIM-enabled projects throughout all global geographies at all project stages, and project types that include commercial, workplace, and retail sectors. He is also part of CallisonRTKL Delivery Council, the global Arcadis BIM Community and Arcadis EMEUK Regional BIM Manager.
Dynamic shifts have emerged in the digital realm of building design and physical methods of off-site fabrication. Buildings are increasingly manufactured/assembled rather than constructed/crafted. This class will present these digital procedures for modelling buildings in Revit whilst simultaneously assembling and managing your building components through Dynamo and into Inventor for fabrication. This entails navigating a hierarchy of linked/nested Revit models, families, and formulas; aligning the design BIM with detailed fabrication models in Inventor. Dynamo will be applied as a tool to automate, annotate, and design the building layout with assembled components. Orchestrate the building model, drawing sets, and work instructions in Revit alongside Dynamo to lay out building components, visualise building data, component relationships, and simultaneously assemble Revit components for building site context, component assembly in factory layout, and final modules in transportation.

Using the IFC Exporter Plugin, we will explore all the hidden settings, controls, and tricks to give you the confidence, and control as to what information appears in the IFC. This session will discuss the BIM 360 portfolio and how it can support you in design through to construction. You will get hands-on with Revit and Collaboration for Revit using BIM 360 Team to communicate with other team members to resolve design issues faster. Use BIM 360 Glue to spell-check your models against other disciplines. You will then investigate how your design can be taken out to site to help with commissioning and progress tracking.

Have you ever received a model and wondered what’s inside? Or questioned how the model was put together? Do you have issues with your model performance and don’t know where to start looking? We are not just talking about the geometry but the metadata and how the model has been put together. This session will look under the bonnet of the Revit model and assess the quality and suitability of the data so that a valid assessment can be made of what the model can be used for and if it is safe for you to integrate into your own data set. The session will discuss Quality Assurance and introduce a process/tool that utilizes Revit capabilities for management along with applications such as Autodesk Model Checker and Dynamo, accumulating into a report that details how compliant and suitable the model is.
We all hear it... Revit doesn't do beautiful drawings. We hear it enough to sometimes believe it but we know the reality. With a little extra care and some playful control of tools such as Filters and Depth Cueing, we can make a tired flat 2D drawing spring off the page. designtech and BPTW Partnership have worked closely on these workflows, tested over the past year on delivered projects. Together we will show attendees how to use every available tool for 2D graphic representation within Revit. At no point will we take information away from Revit, enabling the BIM process to remain robust while giving designers the ability to turn complex data into beautiful drawings.
This session examines 2 recent advances in BIM in the field of geotechnics. The first case study relates to the sharing of site-generated data, that is gathered electronically on-site, processed, and then uploaded to the BIM model, all automatically. In this way the stakeholders are seeing the object attributes updated in the integrated model in real time as the work is done. The advantages of this process include the obvious savings in time and effort, avoiding mistakes, self-certification, and the manifest openness that supports collaboration.
This class will present how project teams can collaborate to develop information on a BIM project. We will initially look at setting up a plan of work to give clarity on which team members are delivering what information and when. Following this we will look at how designers can develop their designs using standardised BIM objects in Revit. Practical examples will then be given on how to link these objects digitally to the associated specification to better coordinate this information and reduce risk. We will finish by exploring the role of the cloud and big data in future workflows and show practical examples of how the Forge platform can accelerate this. Stephen was part of the team that developed the UK government’s BIM Level 2 standards and tools. As director of research and innovation at NBS, he has been fundamental in developing the products that led to NBS being the first UK Autodesk Solution Associate in 2016.
This class will present the first SNCF rail project that implemented a BIM approach. The project consists of transforming the existing Saint-Cloud Station in order to interconnect to the future metro station and fit the increase of passenger traveler flow. As part of this presentation, we'll address the following topics: BIM for rail issues and expectations; SNCF challenges and expected BIM outcomes; overview of the Saint-Cloud project; reasons for using BIM on this project and expected outcomes; approach taken in partnership with Autodesk Consulting; outlook.
Concluding the class presented at Autodesk University 2015, Elliott Crossley returns to discuss the construction phase of a £330 million project in the UK. This class reveals the strategy and workflows involved in integrating fabrication information back into the Building Information Model, divulging the toolbox of a multidisciplinary design team at BDP from inception to completion, challenging current technology throughout, to deliver an Asset Information Model suitable for use in building operation.
In this session, we’ll look at ideal workflows for using Revit software, and how to avoid key time-wasting traps, as discovered the hard way by an experienced Revit software-using mechanical engineer. Using a simple heating system design process as an example, the class will show live use of core Revit features, Dynamo, and bespoke add-ins. Emerging features such as Insight 360 software are shown as a great opportunity for engineers and architects to collaborate during initial design stages, and options for calculating heating and cooling loads are discussed. I’ll also give some specific technical tips and tricks to help engineers get the most out of their Revit software systems and spaces.
