Automated plan review that is integrated into Building Information Modeling (BIM) can ease the pain of achieving compliance with building codes. It also can have a big impact on an architect's bottom line, an enormous impact on your client's bottom line through expediting the permit and commissioning processes, and it can even impact city revenue by accelerating property and sales tax receipts. In this presentation, you will see an innovative process designed for using Revit software with software for automated plan review. After adding building code information to the BIM model, the add-in acts as a client to send data to a cloud service that assesses whether the building complies with particular sections of the International Building Code. Results are displayed as annotations of the BIM model, enabling quick alteration to achieve compliance. A plan-review report aids authorities in assuring that the building is ready for a permit. Automated plan review can disrupt and change the building industry by offering benefits to all stakeholders.

Mark Clayton

Dedicated to teaching and research in architectural computing since 1986, Mark is the William M. Peña Professor of Information Management at Texas A&M University and the CEO of SMARTreview Inc., a new company that provides cloud services for automated plan review integrated with BIM. He earned a B Arch from Virginia Tech, an M Arch from UCLA, and a PhD from Stanford University. He has taught general computing methods, Computer-Aided Design, Building Information Modeling, software development, and design studio at Cal Poly and Texas A&M, and guided over 40 students in masters and doctoral research. From 2001 to 2006, Mark was the Executive Associate Dean of the College of Architecture at Texas A&M, and he was the Interim Head of the Department of Architecture from 2007-2008.

I am a practicing Architect in Bryan Texas and adjunct faculty at Texas A&M University. I hold a PhD in Architecture and focus my work, teaching, and research at the intersection of digital design methods and professional practice. WHY we need to deliver high performing Architecture has not changed, but Software is changing HOW we deliver that Architecture as well as the associated business models. Architects must become purveyors of value, not just buildings, arbiters of health, safety, and welfare, not simply followers of code, and we must become champions of positivist design.
