The field of construction is well placed to benefit from the advent of machine learning and artificial intelligence. As part of the BIM 360 Project IQ Team at Autodesk, I've had the privilege of being a part of Autodesk's foray into machine learning for construction. This talk will focus on summarizing the developments in this space, and we'll cover some ways in which one can prepare to maximize value from this technology. The class has 2 sections. The first part provides a broad survey of some of the applications of AI and machine learning in construction, and the potential impact. These processes are making changes across various areas, including risk management, schedule management, subcontractor management, construction site environment monitoring, and safety, to name a few. In the second part, the focus will be on construction industry leaders who will talk about their experiences with smarter tools in their daily jobs, and their views of the impact that these tools might have in the short and long terms.
This class is targeted at a wider audience of professionals involved at various levels of construction. Executives and thought leaders would benefit from understanding the tools and processes which are benefiting from AI and machine learning. Superintendents, project managers, project engineers would gain from understanding how their peers use this technology to manage their work daily.

Josh Kanner is Founder & CEO of Smartvid.io, a cloud platform for the intelligent management, collaboration and analytics of industrial video and photos.Most recently he was co-founder of Vela Systems, a pioneer in the use of web and tablet workflows for construction and capital projects. There he led the company’s product, marketing and business development functions. Vela Systems grew from bootstrapped beginnings to include over 50% of the ENR Top Contractors as customers and deployments all over the globe. The company was successfully acquired by Autodesk in 2012 and has been rebranded as BIM 360 Field.Prior to founding Vela Systems, Josh was responsible for product management and strategy at Emptoris (now part of IBM), a web-based strategic sourcing software company with customers including Motorola, GlaxoSmithKline, Bank of America, and American Express.Kanner graduated from Brown University and earned an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He still gets excited to put on a hard hat and walk a job.
Josh Lannen's current position with BOND Brothers is a quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) manager, and he oversees BIM 360 software deployment.Has worked on projects for clients such as Liberty Mutual, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, and Harvard Business School. Over the last 17 years, he has held the positions of field engineer, assistant superintendent, superintendent, and project manager. In his current role as Corporate QA/QC manager for BOND, he oversees the quality program and BIM 360 software database for the entire company. He is continually improving best practices and keeping the company current on industry advances and trends. Josh earned a BS in civil engineering from Northeastern University and is a member in good standing with American Society of Civil Engineers.

As campus managers and cities look to embrace the Internet of Things, many are finding that while they have lots of data, managing this data so it can be used in a meaningful way is proving more difficult. Our session will explore how BIM can be used as a vehicle by campus managers and cities to capture, store, and disseminate multiple levels of data (e.g., building, social, environmental, government, economic) as well as generate additional benefits. We will look at how a 3D model can be created in Revit / InfraWorks and populated with data from many sources (e.g., sensors, real-time traffic information, social forums etc.) which can then be accessed by managers, governments, and citizens using tablets, apps, dashboards, and software such as BIM 360 Field. We will also discuss the benefits that can be generated including better decision making, easier benchmarking, improved performance, greater connectivity, and enhanced community engagement.
Identify and outline strategies for creating and executing a prefabrication plan for a construction project. Topics covered will include plan creation, execution across multiple stakeholders, and ways to respond to change, as well as using QR for tracking materials and prefab assemblies, and bringing it all together for just-in-time delivery to the job site.
The cloud is already helping thousands of architects, engineers, and contractors with improving communication and quality of designs for taking to site. This session will discuss the BIM 360 portfolio and how it can support you in design through to construction. You will get hands-on with Revit and Collaboration for Revit using BIM 360 Team to communicate with other team members to resolve design issues faster. Use BIM 360 Glue to spell-check your models against other disciplines. You will then investigate how your design can be taken out to site to help with commissioning and progress tracking.
The built environment is fundamentally changing, empowered by innovation in virtual design and construction (VDC). The result is more-complex and increasingly elegant designs, as well as streamlined procurement and construction methods. This panel includes academic and industry leaders responsible for developing and implementing new VDC technology, including Hilda Espinal of CannonDesign, Ricardo Khan of Mortenson Construction, Forest Flager of Stanford University, and Danielle Dy Buncio of VIATechnik. The panel will discuss advancements seen on past and current industry projects in the areas of prefabrication, artificial intelligence, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, and multidisciplinary design optimization. Panelists will use multimedia presentations and demonstrations to communicate the material to attendees to facilitate thoughtful and interactive discussion. Attendees will leave with a greater understanding of the impact that VDC has on project delivery and performance.
This session examines 2 recent advances in BIM in the field of geotechnics. The first case study relates to the sharing of site-generated data, that is gathered electronically on-site, processed, and then uploaded to the BIM model, all automatically. In this way the stakeholders are seeing the object attributes updated in the integrated model in real time as the work is done. The advantages of this process include the obvious savings in time and effort, avoiding mistakes, self-certification, and the manifest openness that supports collaboration.
Concluding the class presented at Autodesk University 2015, Elliott Crossley returns to discuss the construction phase of a £330 million project in the UK. This class reveals the strategy and workflows involved in integrating fabrication information back into the Building Information Model, divulging the toolbox of a multidisciplinary design team at BDP from inception to completion, challenging current technology throughout, to deliver an Asset Information Model suitable for use in building operation.

This class will discuss the benefits of capturing existing conditions using laser scanners on a very large retail project. We will discuss the integration of point cloud data within the intelligent model in Revit software. You will learn how to utilize laser scan data across various components within the Autodesk Architecture, Engineering, and Construction Collection (Revit software, Navisworks software, ReCap software). This class will also discuss data collection of building equipment using BIM 360 Field software to connect project stakeholders located across different offices.
In this session, Jeff Metcalf, CIO from Layton Construction will be presenting how Layton, Forge and other Cloud Service APIs have been leveraged in order to integrate with CMiC, an internal ERP system, to reduce overhead and increase visibility into Key Performance Indicators across many projects using Autodesk Cloud Services including BIM360 (HQ) and BIM360 Field.
