At the project level and specific to pull planning, Skanska continues to evolve from executing pull plans to fully implementing the Last Planner System. The intent of this session is to share some better practices for managing pull plans, and also to demonstrate how the firm is using BIM 360 Plan software to do so.

As a change agent in our legacy industry of construction, Michael is actively driving Skanska’s development of solutions and services aligned to innovation, technology insertion, continuous improvement and process integration. He has more than fifteen years of experience providing innovation-based leadership in aerospace, manufacturing, ecommerce, technology and the military. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering Management from West Point and dual Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Construction Management (MS) degrees from MIT. He previously held operations and IT management positions while at Boeing, and US Army active duty leadership positions as a combat Engineer platoon leader, executive officer and general’s aide. Currently, Michael is working to develop and provide enhanced client facing service offerings that integrate our existing VDC-related solutions and capabilities within the domains of asset management and business intelligence. He also serves as the integration point between the Innovative Construction Solutions group, IT and project operations. Additionally, Michael serves as a vice-chair on Skanska's National Lean Committee and is the Lean Champion for the Boston office.
This class will go over all aspects of an integrated project delivery (IPD) / Building Information Modeling (BIM) project for health care or science projects. We'll review different methods of project delivery and effective implementation plans. During the class, we'll cover fundamentals of laser scanning for IPD/BIM projects and we'll show examples. We'll review and discuss owner agreements and lean practices that are used on the IPD projects. In regards to legal aspects, we'll discuss some information for different project scenarios.
This session will bring together several companies that have developed unique integrations with the BIM 360 platform to extend the reach of the tools and workflows connected into BIM 360's common data environment for construction management. They'll each share their experience and offer insights into the development process and business opportunities. (Joint AU/Forge DevCon class).
This panel discussion will explore opportunities to manage construction execution by creating a performance-based strategy to align project performance with anticipated outcomes, thus creating the high-performing building. Using principles such as the simple framework as found in Integrating Project Delivery (Fischer, Ashcraft, Reed, Khanzode), production planning methods, lean principles, and integrated design, the discussion will explain strategy, practice, and the vision of future state. The panel will provide insight into the theory and opportunities for improving performance. Once the framework has been agreed upon, teams can operate a performance management system by defining the performance criteria and validating performance through data collection for specific and measurable metrics. There will be system alignment throughout the project lifecycle in a collaborative environment to provide transparent and powerful information to the team for optimized performance.
BAM has developed a technical delivery solution to manage and deliver data throughout the different stages of a project using Autodesk's desktop and cloud products. This process is aligned to best industry standards (BS/PAS 1192-2). COBie is BAM's way of cleverly dealing with data as a project is being delivered. Empowering BAM's supply chain to capture and populate this data in a simple, no-fuss manner has been key to our success. BAM has worked with Autodesk to develop a new computer-aided facility management system for facilities management called BIM 360 Ops (formerly Building Ops). Having this system in place as the buildings operator has let BAM use the best of BIM 360 Field software during project delivery. It is this systems integration that has helped BAM to achieve significant cost and timesavings. The principle case study carried out by BAM compares how 2 similar public-private partnership projects were procured and delivered-one with BIM technology, and the other without.

Data sources in construction are exploding. Mobile devices and apps like BIM 360 Field are capturing and storing thousands of photos on typical projects. Drones, scanners, wearables and other construction management apps are adding to the mountain of data collected as a by-product of their use. To bring structure to our interpretations of these growing data streams, machine learning solutions are being applied to sort, filter, and surface insights so that projects can find the information they're looking for and make better decisions. This class will look at some early practical examples such as photo and video recognition for management and sorting of construction images, and predictive analytics in terms of highlighting high risk quality and safety issues. We'll also consider where the industry is going, as disparate data sources and applications become more integrated.
This class will be delivered by Kier Construction, a UK-based, industry-leading construction company, supported by Topcon and Autodesk. Kier will describe how they have applied Autodesk BIM 360 tools in collaboration with 3D laser scanners and total stations into their workflows on a complex construction project undertaken in the UK. Kier will demonstrate the key benefits of collaborative working, effective supply chain engagement, and adoption of technology on construction sites to realise and exceed client expectations. Using office-based software such as Navisworks, Revit, and ReCap, we will cover how using a variety of mass data capture techniques to gather as-built documentation combined with integrated on-site verification and management has improved efficiencies and reduced errors on construction sites. Kier will appraise the impact of using innovative new workflows to overcome interoperability challenges between several types of BIM authoring software.
There's a perfect storm of technology change driving the construction revolution today. Mobile devices, Internet of Things, sensors, and drones are continuously capturing construction job-site data and the cloud is aggregating this data. Machine-learning applications such as BIM 360 IQ software help construction project teams analyze risk from this data in real time and take corrective actions. Layton Construction and Autodesk have been collaborating and working together for the past year to apply the BIM 360 IQ machine-learning system for construction safety. In this session, Cooper Darling-an assistant project manager from Layton Construction-will be sharing his project manager experiences involved in helping identify and reduce safety risks on a construction job site with the aid of assistive technologies such as machine learning. Cooper is also part of Layton's National Safety Leadership Team, and he's helping champion the processes and standards based on BIM 360 software for Layton.
The class will cover the Last Planner principles developed by the Lean Institute and how the software supports this principle. The benefits of adopting the Last Planner principles include increased reliability, greater savings in time and cost, less wastage of materials, and greater utilization of plant. The benefits are further enhanced by collaboration with the supply chain, where they can review their elements of a plan in line with main contractors, and feed into BIM 360 Plan web service, therefore streamlining interactions. The gains made through BIM 360 Plan in this process (such as staying in the field longer) reduce time spent compiling reports in the office and improve Planed Percentage Complete (PPC) with accountability for lost time weekly—enabling root-cause analysis to aid in targeted software and provide a platform for detailed whole project as-built data. In order to reach the pinnacle of collaboration and return on investment with Building Information Modeling (BIM), project stakeholders need the ability to update critical project information without redundant processing between multiple sources of information. While much of the formal documentation process has moved from analog to digital, teams are still challenged to integrate the data handover and approval process. Traditionally, price has been the sole factor considered in selection of construction contractors by project owners, and in awarding subcontracts further down the supply chain. Best-value procurement enables other factors (such as qualifications, schedule, quality, and performance-based criteria) to evaluate and select subcontractors, with the ultimate goal of providing the highest value for the end customer. BIM 360 cloud services have enabled owners and contractors working on thousands of projects to collaborate with their supply chain and access critical project data throughout the building-construction lifecycle. But it also keeps a record of this data, which can be analyzed to surface insights into supply chain performance. This class will focus on how contractors can now use objective indicators of past performance as a means for selection of their supply chain.
