Description

Description

Data sources in construction are exploding. Mobile devices and apps like BIM 360 Field are capturing and storing thousands of photos on typical projects. Drones, scanners, wearables and other construction management apps are adding to the mountain of data collected as a by-product of their use. To bring structure to our interpretations of these growing data streams, machine learning solutions are being applied to sort, filter, and surface insights so that projects can find the information they're looking for and make better decisions. This class will look at some early practical examples such as photo and video recognition for management and sorting of construction images, and predictive analytics in terms of highlighting high risk quality and safety issues. We'll also consider where the industry is going, as disparate data sources and applications become more integrated.

Michael Moran

Michael Moran is co-founder of TELOS, a digital construction consultancy. He helps customers optimise their construction processes through adoption of mobile and cloud tools, with a focus on design review, production planning, scheduling, field management, layout, and project handover to owner/operator. His master's thesis in construction management at the Delft University of Technology was a comparative study designed to assess productivity gains from using Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools on Skanska U.S. Building projects. Together with Skanska and Autodesk, Moran presented a webinar on this case study. Moran has taught 8 previous Autodesk University classes and has spoken multiple times about the benefits of cloud-based BIM at the European 5D Conference. Other experiences in the building industry include founding and running a concrete specialty forming firm, working as a consultant on major infrastructure projects, and obtaining a bachelor's degree in architecture.
