Key Learning

Key Learning

  • Understand common challenges to the current structural fabrication workflow
  • Learn how to apply lean principles to design review, steel detailing, steel fabrication, and on-site installation
  • Learn how to analyze current workflows objectively to identify where improvements can occur
  • Learn how to use BIM software to optimize design, review, detailing, fabrication, and installation for structural steel

Description

Description

The manufacturing industry achieves benefits through standardization of parts and repetitive processes. Conversely, these benefits are very difficult to attain in the steel fabrication industry, where almost every assembly is made of custom or one-off parts. This industry talk will highlight how Building Information Modeling (BIM) software and lean processes can be used to achieve similar benefits to the manufacturing industry, despite the diverse range of structures and total lack of standardization in the structural steel industry. Design review, drawing production, fabrication issue, quality control, radio frequency interference management, and installation tracking can all be optimized using disruptive thought and cloud-based tools to ensure each stakeholder receives the correct information at the right time across every stage of the project. Forget everything you already knew about the steel fabrication workflow and bring an open mind ready to learn how to take structural steel construction into a new fully optimized era!

Ian Coats

Ian currently serves as a Subject Matter Expert on Structural Fabrication at Autodesk. As part of his current role, he provides demonstrations, training and industry liaison. He started in the construction industry as a Draftsman, Layout Engineer and Site Manager for a large General Contractor in Scotland working commercial developments, industrial plants and bridges. Subsequently, he focused towards the steel industry gaining experience as a Project Manager for a fabrication shop, before moving into the early BIM era creating structural models of major retail developments for the largest fabricator in the country. After coming to the USA he has become more involved in construction software, leading a Technical Support Team and then as a Product Manager. Ian is an entertaining and renowned speaker in the community. He delivers thought leadership talks and technical demonstrations regularly to prominent industry groups. Ian also hosts the popular ‘BIMing With Confidence’ blog site.
