Building Information Modeling (BIM) is dominating the design, construction, and management of much of the vertical construction field, and has now started to gain the attention of the hydropower industry. At present, the more advanced examples of using BIM are from other industries. However, there are a growing number of examples of BIM adoption for hydropower projects. This presentation will demonstrate how BIM has been applied to hydroelectric facility design and rehabilitation, and we will look at the lessons learned and challenges based on recent experiences. Examples will include reality capture, parametric design, clash detection, visualization, engineering integration, quantity schedule, 4D modeling, A360 software for collaboration, BIM 360 mobile and web platform for engineering services in construction, and the adoption of new technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality. Even for the audience outside of the hydro industry, we would like to provide an insight into the use of BIM on any built environment. This session features Revit and InfraWorks 360. AIA Approved

Joseph Huang

Joseph Chuen-huei Huang is Building Information Modeling (BIM) practice leader for North America at MWH Global (now part of Stantec). He is a licensed architect with 20 years of professional experience in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry with a focus on BIM implementation and digital design integration. He has served as the BIM manager for numerous large-scale projects, including the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks. He has a broad range of experience from vertical construction to infrastructure, and has successfully integrated BIM into design, construction, and operation and maintenance phases. Besides that, he is the author of Participatory Design for Prefab House: Using Internet and Query Approach of Customizing Prefabricated Houses, and presents BIM-related topics regularly to universities and global industry groups at international conferences like Autodesk University, SAME, ACADIA, eCAADe, and CADDRIA. He has a PhD degree in architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Oregon.

Raghavendra Bhat

Raghavendra Bhat is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) leader at MWH Global, providing integrated project delivery expertise utilizing Autodesk, Inc., software. Bhat has over 11 years of professional experience working in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry using BIM technology on a wide variety of international and local projects (for example, federal government, public works, wet infrastructure, and skyscrapers). Bhat has also mentored and trained, and he has developed standards and guidelines and project templates / standard templates. At MWH, Bhat covers developing Revit software standards for the organization, global integration of projects in line with MWH Americas’ expectations, and BIM protocols. Bhat coordinates with a global team to support the MWH Americas Design BIM Group, including developing communications, comparing methods, and collaborating toward common growth and integration of BIM globally. He is the point person to direct BIM standardized processes at the discipline level, and he works closely with the MWH Americas BIM Discipline Group leader to ensure consistency in their specific discipline.
