Quentin has been involved with Autodesk technology for over 25 years (starting with release 10). Carolinas HealthCare System will review strategic implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) from project inception to facilities management. We’ll then explore the benefits of project processes, such as multiteam member collaboration, virtual coordination, and owner BIM standards that help minimize project risk. The Link between RISA software and Revit software has existed for more than a decade now, and has seen widespread adoption in the structural engineering community. The Grand Paris Express (GPE) is a major automated metro infrastructure project in Paris, with a new 200-kilometer tunnel line. The maintenance site (depot) is a key structure in a limited space inserted into a dense urban environment. This situation leads to numerous challenging conflicts between the rail and building design. In this class, we will share Systra’s experience on project Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation, and show how BIM can be used for rail infrastructure design. You will also discover how BIM can be effective for track alignment, utilities, hydrology, catenary, and telecom when interfacing with architecture, structure, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) services. BIM has been used on this project to facilitate data exchange—especially between a civil design with AutoCAD Civil 3D software and architectural design with Revit software—but also to improve 3D coordination and design review. As mobile technology comes of age on the construction site, the use of iPads and BIM 360 Docs software can now replace the paper plans of the past. The transition to this new environment can be smooth and seamless, or it can be hindered by multiple false starts. This class will provide a live demonstration of the complete process of implementing a BIM 360 Docs project for a sample fire-protection construction project. The lessons taught in this class will have obvious application beyond the fire protection trade, but limiting the live demonstrations to a specific trade provides clarity and enables the presentation to pay some attention to the often-overlooked fire sprinkler industry. We expect the live-demonstration approach of this presentation to provide a great opportunity to understand the capabilities and value of BIM 360 Docs software to anyone involved in the process, including owner/managers, IT personnel, designers, and installers. This session will present the new DeWalt Corporation Hanger Design plug-in for Revit software, which automates the placement and design of hangers and trapeze assemblies for common MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) systems, such as pipe, duct, conduit, and cable trays. The placement of these assemblies has historically been based on “rule of thumb” sizing and spacing and/or prescriptive rules from various trade-specific handbooks that do not necessarily comply with current building-code requirements or structural point-load limitations. Modeling MEP systems in Revit software offers many advantages for coordination, prefabrication, consolidation of parallel runs, and placement of cast-in-place hanger inserts. This new tool analyzes these systems, and automatically places hanger/trapeze assemblies, anchors, and seismic bracing per building-code requirements with engineering calculation reports automatically generated.
