Sources of video and photo content are rapidly increasing within construction. In addition to mobile phones and tablets, drones and even wearables are starting to generate their own views of “reality” from the job site. How can this information best be capitalized on for value during construction, and managed afterward for future retrieval? In this case study-driven class, Oliver Smith of Skanska and Josh Kanner of Smartvid.io will explore how a new set of technologies are helping to deal with the content proliferation—and are also going beyond to elevate the power and value of this visual data. New techniques in machine learning are enabling mining of the native content to help tag and search the ever-growing set of videos and photos coming from the field. Once tagged, the content can be integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM) for ongoing progress updates during the project and other workflows. Oliver Smith has 16-plus years of experience within the design and construction industry focusing on lean processes, sustainability, Building Information Modeling (BIM), emerging and advancing technologies, and services, to name a few areas. Over his career, he has created and implemented many standards and workflows to help integrate a more streamlined and effective process. In his efforts, he has helped to engage clients, project teams, and other participants in the building process to create an understanding of where and how technology can provide a positive impact before, during, and beyond the construction phase. At Skanska, Smith serves as the regional virtual design and construction director for the southeast region (Washington, DC; Maryland; Virginia; North and South Carolina; Georgia; Florida; Louisiana; and Puerto Rico). This role has evolved into a more expansive one, enabling him to utilize his expertise on all aspects of his career rather than BIM. Currently, he heads up Skanska's unmanned autonomous systems (drone) program, and he has recently become a certificated pilot.
Josh Kanner is an experienced entrepreneur with a proven track record in fast-growing enterprise software companies.Most recently he was co-founder of Vela Systems, a pioneer in the use of web and tablet workflows for construction and capital projects. There he led the company’s product, marketing and business development functions. Vela Systems grew from bootstrapped beginnings to include over 50% of the ENR Top Contractors as customers and deployments all over the globe. The company was successfully acquired by Autodesk in 2012 and has been rebranded as BIM 360 Field.Prior to founding Vela Systems, Josh was responsible for product management and strategy at Emptoris (now part of IBM), a web-based strategic sourcing software company with customers including Motorola, GlaxoSmithKline, Bank of America, and American Express.Kanner graduated from Brown University and earned an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He still gets excited to put on a hard hat and walk a job.

This class will showcase the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Marcus Tower expansion and the all-in virtual design involvement on this project. We'll explain how to utilize models and BIM Team/C4R for Revit's cloud-based products and services for multiple aspects of the project, including the involvement in preconstruction for marketing, estimating, and self-perform opportunities; the integration of drone flights and parametric, in-house crane models for site logistics and safety planning; virtual reality for headwall mock-ups; and structural review. We'll complete the discussion with lessons learned for workflow, full-team integration, and training for the all-in approach.

Black & Veatch are teamed up with HDR on the design of a large wastewater treatment facility project in the Kansas City area. Combining the right processes with Autodesk technology is delivering unprecedented collaboration, despite each of the design teams having resources scattered around the world. This session will showcase how the project team has used Collaboration for Revit cloud service and BIM 360 Team and Fusion Team (formerly A360 Team), as well as highlight some of the workflows used to promote efficiency in production.
As Building Information Modeling (BIM) uptake continues to grow across all disciplines, MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) design and MEP spatial coordination is at a particularly interesting stage. The need for both design information inputs and the sharing of design updates from architects, structural engineers, and various specialist MEP designers places pressure on, and increases risk for, MEP coordination teams. While many collaboration tools have been used for file sharing, the advent of Collaboration for Revit cloud service has provided a platform for a new level of buy-in and adoption. The range of benefits that Collaboration for Revit provides-including the ability to house central files-is seeing an increased level of engagement and improved output on time in the industry. We'll demonstrate, through our established workflow and numerous worldwide projects, just how to manage MEP BIM projects using tools such as Revit MEP software and Navisworks software, and we'll show participants the benefits of Collaboration for Revit for effective MEP coordination management.
In this class, Kevin O'Connor from Parsons Corporation and Rick Larson from Autodesk will define augmented reality (AR) and how it differs from mixed reality and virtual reality; review current state of AR; identify use cases for AR in infrastructure; review best practices to prepare an InfraWorks model and scenario for use in the InfraWorks iPad application; demonstrate AR using the InfraWorks iPad application; and discuss use of AR to display proposed models for a rail project.
Identify and outline strategies for creating and executing a prefabrication plan for a construction project. Topics covered will include plan creation, execution across multiple stakeholders, and ways to respond to change, as well as using QR for tracking materials and prefab assemblies, and bringing it all together for just-in-time delivery to the job site.
In this presentation, Skanska USA Building and the University of Washington will describe results from a joint applied research study on collaborative preconstruction and planning workflows focused on model-based estimating. We'll present the workflows and toolsets for using design models in conceptual and detailed estimating for consistent use throughout the construction process. We'll also present on the value and benefits of using model-based estimation for collaboration between design and construction, and share best practices for setting up teams and processes for success. Additionally, we'll present proven practices from Skanska that include common workflow standards, and we'll show examples of how to use Revit software, Navisworks software, and Assemble to vet models for appropriateness of use, extract quantities from models, validate quantity and assembly assumptions, and then incorporate these into construction estimates.
This class will provide an overview of BIM implementation on one of the world's largest projects, the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks project which includes two massive lock facilities - one on the Atlantic side and another on the Pacific - each with three chambers and complex mechanical and electrical systems for locking Neo-Panamax vessels.BIM technology was used to manage the design and construction of this complex project.What if we started the Panama Canal Expansion today, with the dramatic advances in BIM that have occurred in only the last few years? With InfraWorks - which was not available during the planning phase - we can propose site design and road layout with GIS information. With Revit Parts - which was not available during the design phase - we can slice a model easily with sketch lines to produce the lift models for the concrete pouring sequence.With BIM 360 cloud services - also newly available - we can work better across regions and continents for design collaboration.Integrating these BIM tools with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies, we can now better visualize our design during the construction process. This presentation will present a "what if" scenario, to study how the design of this mega-project would proceed today, and to propose a new design template for the future.
