Historically, the architecture, engineering, and construction industry has operated in information silos. With the creation of the U.K. BIM mandate, the government has focused on the end product, and has essentially farmed out the workflow for project teams working in a model-based environment. Never before, has there been such an open and sharing mentality among would-be competitors trying to achieve a common goal. This session is the “warts and all“ account of 2 U.K. architecture firms changing perspectives, office cultures, mindsets, and deliverables, focusing on examples of where new technology and innovative workflows have assisted with communication, collaboration, integration, and systems coordination to provide a consistent approach for projects. After attending this class you will understand how change management and communication with an extended project team can benefit your client, the holistic project, and, ultimately, its lifecycle design, along with the negative impacts that not embracing change may have on your business. This session features Revit, BIM 360 Glue, and Navisworks Manage. AIA Approved
This class will explore the implementation of an efficient workflow for 3D scanning of large plants. From laser scanning at the field until a point cloud, which can be combined with a 2D layout and 3D models, our scan projects count regularly more than 100 scans. After the scans are taken, the scans are removed from noise and then divided in layers according to the flow sheet. The buildings are also on a separate layer and divided into roof, walls, and floor. These scans are then combined in Navisworks software with a 3D model of a new line generated at our company. The 3D models are made with Inventor software. A 2D layout, which we receive from the customer, is also attached. This workflow has been improved on a lot since the start, and this is what we want to teach in this class. Recently we purchased a drone to capture photos at places that are not reachable for our scanner (for example, ducting on a roof). A 3D point cloud can then be derived from those photos and combined with the laser scan point cloud This session features ReCap, Inventor Professional, and Navisworks Manage.

Clash detection is more than detecting the intersection of 2 or more objects. The Clash Detective is one of the most powerful tools in Navisworks Manage software. We will examine in detail how to solve firestop-related clashes and how to create consolidated submittals for government authorities. In a multiplatform workflow, you can use models from your preferred MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) application—like Fabrication CADmep software, AutoCAD MEP software, or Revit software—to generate a bill of material, and enable the tool to place hundreds of firestop objects automatically into your Building Information Modeling (BIM) model utilizing the Hilti plug-in for firestop. See how to quickly and easily include into your BIM model UL-Systems details; installation guidance; and X, Y, Z coordinates. Learn how to use Point Layout software to export data to a total station for easy and timesaving placement of cast-ins and sleeves on the construction site. Document the installation in the documentation system for later building operation and maintenance. This session features Navisworks Manage and AutoCAD MEP.

Reality capture has become the new normal for the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry in delivering and executing projects. But as is the case with any new method, the first few years are always the Wild Wild West—with minimal standards, compliance checks, and quality procedures in place. This roundtable will give participants the ability to have detailed discussions with industry experts who’ve been in the trenches on hundreds of reality-capture jobs, including static LiDAR (light detection and ranging), drones, and photogrammetry. This roundtable will focus discussions on methods for determining whether to procure services or move them in house, staffing requirements for project execution, and critical elements to better ensure successful usage of reality-capture data. This session features ReCap 360 and Navisworks Manage.

This session concerns the design of an office-building project wherein Building Information Modeling (BIM) was not considered in the design contract, but was initiated once the project had started. During this class, we will share our experience of managing 2 architects, 2 structural engineering companies, and an MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineering company, with respect to an ongoing BIM execution plan. The class shows that convincing the design team to integrate BIM processes is essential to respond to owner’s goals. We will explain how to convert the project conditions and requirements into BIM processes. The class specifically will focus on modeling scheduling according to an existing SNCF railway platform (geometric and acoustic conditions), and constraints due to existing structures. It also will focus on processes that cover the uses of the Revit software model to respond to estimation and sustainable-information models. In addition, we will talk about how we were able to submit the design earlier in the process for facade construction. This session features Revit and Navisworks Manage.
