In architecture, technology and computers provide ways for us to produce and share design documentation. Until now, the profession has divided our work processes into a discovery phase with hand sketching and a production phase where the sketches are developed into computer-aided illustrations. Architectural design is currently experiencing a shift wherein there is an integration of hand sketching and technology into a single process. This course will demonstrate the ways in which computers can help us sketch and iterate our ideas, and how we can redefine sketching to include all drawing, direct modeling, and computational studies. “When I say artist I mean the man who is building things—creating molding the earth—whether it be the plains of the west—or the iron ore of Penn. It's all a big game of construction—some with a brush—some with a shovel—some choose a pen”—Jackson Pollock. This session features FormIt 360, Dynamo Studio, and Revit. AIA Approved
Mike Engel, associate AIA, is a designer with Elness Swenson Graham Architects in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a speaker at Autodesk University 2015 and Revit Technology Conference North America (RTCNA) 2016. He has a particular focus on formulating and developing integration between the design and production teams. His previous work at Johnson Braund (JBDG) in Seattle, Washington, was to lead the firm-wide adoption of a Revit software workflow. Prior to JBDG, he studied and worked at Place Architecture in Bozeman, Montana, where he received his Master of Architecture degree from Montana State University. He has a passion for integrating designers’ conceptual hand sketches and artwork into modern technological tools. In his downtime, he enjoys taking his children for bike rides, walking in the park, and going to “sketchouts” where he (and his children) continue to sketch ideas within the world around.
So you want to get your hands on some cool software and see just how much you can achieve in an hour of learning—it's a lot! Come and have fun exploring FormIt and the variety of workflows you can utilise for smart conceptual building design.
Come learn why InfraWorks software has become our go-to for MOT, logistics plans, development planning, and visual animations that create a lasting impression on an audience. We will focus on the rapid model creation tools that enable us to create a virtual stage where we can communicate our project, strategy, and expertise. With the integration of model builder, creating a realistic environment is just a few clicks away—even for the novice user. Incorporating information from many different data sources, we are able to continue to enhance our model using your preferred authoring tools. InfraWorks software enables us to balance speed and level of detail all while delivering high-quality deliverables from a macro perspective. Then we publish it to A360 and begin the collaboration cycle, incorporating comments from cross-functional team members. This is why InfraWorks software has become one of the most powerful tools in our tool chest for winning work and project planning. This session features InfraWorks 360, FormIt 360, and Revit. This lab will cover the interoperability workflows that enable teams to use the right tool for the phase of design and each team member’s expertise and skill sets, enabling their imagination to be the limit of their designs rather than the required toolsets. We will cover 2 different methods for importing geometry into Revit software as native content to produce drawings. With the first method, attendees will learn how to use FormIt 360 software to translate SketchUp models into native Revit content. In the second, attendees will be provided with and instructed on how to apply a premade, easy-to-use Dynamo script that will enable importing Rhino software-generated geometry into Revit native content. The techniques in this lab have been developed and tested on a range of project scales, from large transit projects to residential high-rises to small tenant improvement projects with overwhelming success and quantifiable increases in team productivity and efficiency. This session features Revit Architecture, Dynamo Studio, and FormIt 360. AIA Approved
Explore concept generation by using FormIt 360 software in early design stages. Project initiation and early analytics cascading to downstream integration into Revit software and back again to FormIt 360 software. The class will explore using multiple design applications on the iPad and integrated workflows with Mac- and PC-based applications. Learn how to maximize the continuity of creative intention connecting with multiple team members across multiple offices. This session features FormIt 360, Collaboration for Revit, and Revit. This is an advanced class for those already familiar with FormIt 360 mobile and web app and the user interface, tools, and basic workflows within the app. This session will focus more on the Windows App to utilize more resources. We will cover the advanced modeling techniques, analysis capabilities, pro features (such as session sharing and material creation), workflows to work with Revit software and Revit software families, and integration of Dynamo modeling scripts into FormIt 360. The class will focus heavily on workflow and getting the most out of a FormIt 360 Pro subscription, so your models are layered with Building Information Modeling (BIM)-related information earlier in your design process. This class will not cover the basics of FormIt 360, so if you’re unfamiliar with how to create model content in FormIt 360, it would be better to take a different course. This session features FormIt 360, Dynamo Studio, and Revit Architecture. AIA Approved
In this session, you will learn the basics of the FormIt 360 software user interface and explore the export-import functionality. We will review source file types and locations for urban planning exercises across major cities such as New York; Los Angeles; Washington, DC; and Boston. Then we’ll explore the possibilities of importing files into Revit software using FormIt 360 software’s native Revit file translation process. Finally, we will review the results and enhanced workflow functionality of urban models in linked Revit software files. This session features FormIt 360 and Revit. AIA Approved
In the class, you'll learn how to use your FormIt 360 data for high-end presentations in the product and with other software from Autodesk, Inc. We will cover several exporting file formats (including FBX, OBJ, and DAE) and demonstrate how these work best with other applications such as InfraWorks software and 3ds Max software. You will learn best practices for working with materials, lighting, and cameras across each software platform, and we will review different rendering engines for stills versus animations. By the end of this class, you will be able to present and animate your FormIt 360 data for high-end presentations. This session features FormIt 360 and InfraWorks 360. AIA Approved
FormIt 360 software is a fairly new player to the Autodesk, Inc., field. FormIt 360 is a powerful design-visualization and simulation software that parties nicely with Revit software. Its mobile application and cloud storage make it easy for users to modify designs, whether they’re in the office or on the go. In this session, we will show you how to develop and use a FormIt 360 model for analysis. We will discover how FormIt 360 building models interact with Revit software and its materials. FormIt 360 software’s applications within the Building Information Modeling (BIM) realm, along with its built-in energy analysis functions, are sure to become much-used design tools. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll win over some other “sketchy” application users! You’ll want to RSVP to this design party! This session features FormIt 360 and Revit. AIA Approved
Hitting a brick wall at your firm trying to get people to start using FormIt 360 software instead of the “other” design tool? We will look at strategies to help you win this battle. You will learn how to use Revit software add-ins to establish a library, how to best handle design changes between FormIt 360 software and Revit software, and how to take advantage of Insight 360 software to flush out the best facade design while hitting energy targets. This session features FormIt 360 and Revit. AIA Approved
