This class will focus on how a mega-project (Zoo Interchange Project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—$1.7 billion) Highway Construction Team deployed the use of 3D design models out to field-construction mobile devices. The size and scale of design models, staging sequences, and plan revisions provided some unique challenges for the computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) /virtual design and construction (VDC) engineer to adapt within the BIM 360 software delivery platform. The team overcame these constraints by identifying an export and import process so final model viewing provided as much detail and usability in the BIM 360 Glue platform. The project construction schedule is from 2013 – 2019. The project scope is complete reconstruction of the busiest interchange in the state (350,000 vehicles per day) while maintaining active live traffic through the construction zones. Three large full-model deliverables are required with multiple subset staged models that provide schedule/temporary traffic stages interim through construction. This industry talk will focus on a new perspective on integrated project delivery (IPD) of sustainable, high-performing buildings. They can only be achieved through a building with integrated building systems, which can only be produced through an integrated process. An integrated process depends on the right people and an integrated team, which needs integrated information—that is, BIM+—to function effectively and efficiently. Simulation and visualization are the primary ways in which BIM+ informs the integrated team. Collaboration and colocation are the primary ways that enable the integrated team to integrate processes. Production management methods enable the productive design, fabrication, and construction of the integrated building system. Outcome metrics define the performance of the building and validate the integrated building system. All of this is supported by the appropriate agreement or framework. To date, created and collected asset data has been siloed within its respective native software, forcing users to extract information from each software and aggregate it to create a custom electronic deliverable. This is a very time-consuming manual process with inconsistent deliverables to owners. Cross-platform workflows in the Autodesk, Inc., suite has enabled information to be passed from one software to the next, resulting in a more-aggregated, seamless deliverable. The class will cover the workflows and considerations needed when setting models up in Revit software for export to BIM 360 Glue software to enable these to be used in BIM 360 Field software and then Building Ops software with asset management and operations and maintenance in mind. The presentation will look at how certain data doesn’t flow across the platforms, and we’ll demonstrate alternative work-arounds you can undertake to overcome this. The presentation will look at how to set up your Revit project with the mindset that the models will be used on iPads in BIM 360 Field software, and then we’ll look at how the data will transfer across into the Building Ops application. We will also address which application the data is generated in and we’ll look at examples of who populates this information. We will explore the differences in the Building Ops model viewing appearance, and the considerations that you may want to make when setting up the model at the start of the project with BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Field software, and Building Ops software in mind. The Meisi Lake City Island is the world’s largest twin-helix steel structure. It is very difficult to install elements onto the site precisely with traditional methods. Working with BIM 360 Glue software and Point Layout software, users can generate the set points from Building Information Modeling (BIM) models directly, laying out the data with the total station automatically. The class will show the best practice to set the points to space elements, and run the site survey with a standards procedure. We’ll also show how to get the site position with a total station, and compare the installation results with original BIM model for quality audit. The economic and social value is to eliminate deviation of manual centering, and improve mapping precision; decrease quantity of surveyors with automatic robot, improve mapping efficiency, and shorten working period; and reduce surveying works at high altitudes, and thereby improve safety management. When 3D modeling replaced 2D CAD, only the detailing method changed—not the way data gets transferred to steel fabricators (much of the knowledge in the model is lost). So, while detailers benefited, steel fabricators are still getting the same information in the same format. But now it’s possible for fabricators to extract better information from the Advance Steel software model. American Institute of Steel Construction’s IFC for Steel Fabrication Specification is available directly from Advance Steel software to feed fabricators’ production-management systems and workstations. The new workflow involves sending a single file that a fabricator can use to extract all the information needed for fabrication, including 2D and 3D views, connections, and material information. From there, it’s possible to manage and organize the project ready for fabrication, optimize material, and create the data required to drive and track computer numerical control or manual workstations. Model-based quantification has long been one of the promising applications of Building Information Modeling (BIM).
