In this class, you will learn how to better approach the decommissioning of Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects using the Delim process. Delim enables facility/asset owners and managers to reduce the uncertainty associated with cost, timing, and the management of hazardous materials and environmental issues when demolishing or renovating a building, facility, or network of infrastructure. The process combines proven desktop/cloud/mobile technologies from Autodesk, Inc., to efficiently and accurately scan existing infrastructure into BIM workflows. This provides facility/asset owners with the information needed to make decisions relating to maintenance, design, and/or demolition with a proven path into remediation. Delim provides an information governance framework that ensures decision makers and stakeholders have the information they need, when they need it, so they can make the most informed decisions based on the best-quality data derived in a cost-effective way. Paul Baker is the chairman of the Global CADD Executive Committee at Golder Associates, deploying Global CADD standards/delivery system to over 900 users in 160 countries. Baker has been involved in the beta testing of multiple software platforms and the creation of add-on applications for them. Keith White is an experienced architect and software developer with over 20 years of experience in building design and construction, and a passion for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the use of software within the industry. Currently, White is a technical consultant with Autodesk Consulting, developing solutions for customers in Revit software and the Forge Platform. Prior to joining Autodesk, Inc., White developed custom solutions for the precast concrete industry in Revit software. He was also a partner in an architecture firm, where he worked for 12 years on numerous architectural projects and project types in addition to his roles in CAD/BIM/IT management, training, and the leading of firm-wide adoption of technology strategies. In addition to his architecture, engineering, and construction industry experiences, White has also developed and taught classes for AutoCAD software and Revit software for the University of West Florida.
As campus managers and cities look to embrace the Internet of Things, many are finding that while they have lots of data, managing this data so it can be used in a meaningful way is proving more difficult. Our session will explore how BIM can be used as a vehicle by campus managers and cities to capture, store, and disseminate multiple levels of data (e.g., building, social, environmental, government, economic) as well as generate additional benefits. We will look at how a 3D model can be created in Revit / InfraWorks and populated with data from many sources (e.g., sensors, real-time traffic information, social forums etc.) which can then be accessed by managers, governments, and citizens using tablets, apps, dashboards, and software such as BIM 360 Field. We will also discuss the benefits that can be generated including better decision making, easier benchmarking, improved performance, greater connectivity, and enhanced community engagement.

This session will discuss the BIM 360 portfolio and how it can support you in design through to construction. You will get hands-on with Revit and Collaboration for Revit using BIM 360 Team to communicate with other team members to resolve design issues faster. Use BIM 360 Glue to spell-check your models against other disciplines. You will then investigate how your design can be taken out to site to help with commissioning and progress tracking.
This session examines 2 recent advances in BIM in the field of geotechnics. The first case study relates to the sharing of site-generated data, that is gathered electronically on-site, processed, and then uploaded to the BIM model, all automatically. In this way the stakeholders are seeing the object attributes updated in the integrated model in real time as the work is done. The advantages of this process include the obvious savings in time and effort, avoiding mistakes, self-certification, and the manifest openness that supports collaboration.
Concluding the class presented at Autodesk University 2015, Elliott Crossley returns to discuss the construction phase of a £330 million project in the UK. This class reveals the strategy and workflows involved in integrating fabrication information back into the Building Information Model, divulging the toolbox of a multidisciplinary design team at BDP from inception to completion, challenging current technology throughout, to deliver an Asset Information Model suitable for use in building operation.
The field of construction is well placed to benefit from the advent of machine learning and artificial intelligence. As part of the BIM 360 Project IQ Team at Autodesk, I've had the privilege of being a part of Autodesk's foray into machine learning for construction. This talk will focus on summarizing the developments in this space, and we'll cover some ways in which one can prepare to maximize value from this technology. The class has 2 sections. The first part provides a broad survey of some of the applications of AI and machine learning in construction, and the potential impact. These processes are making changes across various areas, including risk management, schedule management, subcontractor management, construction site environment monitoring, and safety, to name a few. In the second part, the focus will be on construction industry leaders who will talk about their experiences with smarter tools in their daily jobs, and their views of the impact that these tools might have in the short and long terms.
MWH are a global engineering and construction management company who build some of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plants. MWH in conjunction with Autodesk Consulting have implemented an innovative method to embed the construction Inspection Test Plan (ITP) inside BIM 360 Field. This method makes ITP completion intuitive for the site manager and enables the off-site quality management team and project manager to monitor its progress. Zoe Robertson from MWH and Anthony Neal from Autodesk Consulting will demonstrate how an ITP that has been documented in MS Excel can be generated into Autodesk BIM 360 Field clearly showing the building elements that require inspection and what quality inspections need to be conducted. We will also demonstrate how the ITP process can be further streamlined by embedding it in the BIM model during design. We will also discuss the people aspects that need to be understood and considered when driving QA/QC completion on-site.
Data sources in construction are exploding. Mobile devices and apps like BIM 360 Field are capturing and storing thousands of photos on typical projects. Drones, scanners, wearables and other construction management apps are adding to the mountain of data collected as a by-product of their use. To bring structure to our interpretations of these growing data streams, machine learning solutions are being applied to sort, filter, and surface insights so that projects can find the information they're looking for and make better decisions. This class will look at some early practical examples such as photo and video recognition for management and sorting of construction images, and predictive analytics in terms of highlighting high risk quality and safety issues. We'll also consider where the industry is going, as disparate data sources and applications become more integrated.
This class will be delivered by Kier Construction, a UK-based, industry-leading construction company, supported by Topcon and Autodesk. Kier will describe how they have applied Autodesk BIM 360 tools in collaboration with 3D laser scanners and total stations into their workflows on a complex construction project undertaken in the UK. Kier will demonstrate the key benefits of collaborative working, effective supply chain engagement, and adoption of technology on construction sites to realise and exceed client expectations. Using office-based software such as Navisworks, Revit, and ReCap, we will cover how using a variety of mass data capture techniques to gather as-built documentation combined with integrated on-site verification and management has improved efficiencies and reduced errors on construction sites. Kier will appraise the impact of using innovative new workflows to overcome interoperability challenges between several types of BIM authoring software.

This interactive workshop will address the problem of waste in planning and how the Last Planner System improves productivity and schedule reliability. We’ll introduce pull planning: a collaborative scheduling technique that enables teams to develop workflow working backward, thus enabling successor activities to determine what needs to be completed for them to start their work. We’ll put theory into practice in a hands-on, team-based, real-life construction and design simulation to emphasize the importance of pull versus push, reliable flow, and clear subcontractor commitments in the pull-planning process. Hill Construction will describe its Building Information Modeling (BIM) journey so far, and how the firm has applied BIM 360 tools into its workflows on a complex construction project undertaken by Hill Bespoke in Cambridge, England. The class will cover how using a variety of mass-data capture techniques to gather as-built documentation combined with integrated on-site verification and management has improved efficiencies and reduced errors using innovative new workflows. Hill will describe the impact of these new workflows incorporating software (including BIM 360 Field cloud service, BIM 360 Layout cloud service, BIM 360 Glue cloud service, and BIM 360 Docs cloud service) integrated with Topcon mass-data capture and layout solutions, and the efficiencies gained over traditional methods. Building Information Modeling (BIM) delivers value by providing an underpinning for the creation, aggregation, and exchange of models and corresponding intelligent structured data. The availability of powerful solutions in the BIM standard, both on-premise and in the cloud, creates a challenge and, hence, opportunity to implement a scalable integration architecture in the enterprise. While BIM Tools has largely focused on design and construction phases of assets, it also has important applications across entire lifecycles of assets, and is therefore a key enabler of improving asset management. This class will attempt to showcase technology best practices in TOGAF Enterprise architecture to help customers realize the vision of the business stakeholders to connect BIM data with other asset information and also make it available to the entire enterprise and beyond, including their suppliers and end customers. Projects are generating ever-increasing amounts of photo and video documentation. From mobile phones to wearable cameras to drones, the number of devices that can generate visual information is skyrocketing. Unfortunately, storing and organizing this content is not a simple task, nor is linking it to the actual assets. The files are numerous, large, and often do not have the required information associated to help categorize them. This case study of a live project will present a new approach that complements the visual organization capabilities of Revit software (and beyond) with a new product—Smartvid.io—to help store, organize, and tag the video and photo content captured on-site. We will discuss the concept of video-based reality capture within the context of construction, handover, and operations deliverables. This session features Revit, BIM 360 Field, and Building Ops.
