Description

This class will discuss Jacobs Engineering Group’s implementation of AutoCAD Civil 3D software, which started a 3-year journey in preparation for the U.K. Building Information Modeling (BIM) mandate. We will discuss how Jacobs determined which project to use as a pilot, and identification of candidate projects for the early adopter schemes proposed for its U.K. Highways BIM implementation plan. We will talk through the issues faced and resolutions implemented, including the need to create standard subassemblies to enable the company to have greater control over models when compared to the out-of-the-box subassemblies, and the need to re-create them due to construction setting-out issues. The class will conclude with a discussion of the implementation of ProjectWise software on Jacobs’ BIM projects, developments with Bentley to improve the AutoCAD Civil 3D software integration to enable the industry to continue using AutoCAD Civil 3D software effectively, and the use of third-party software that is integrated into AutoCAD Civil 3D software to enable Jacobs to deliver all aspects of 3D. This session features AutoCAD Civil 3D and Navisworks Manage.

Duncan Taylor

Duncan Taylor is a consultant with Jacobs Engineering in the United Kingdom. He has over 17 years of experience working in the design of major highways infrastructure projects in the United Kingdom and Ireland, from initial concept stage through to construction. He leads the development and deployment of Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes within the company’s U.K. highways business, and he takes an active role in developing content for AutoCAD Civil 3D software, working with the firm’s design engineers to find efficient solutions to design modeling problems, and to standardize workflows.

Stephen Barlow

Stephen is leading the development of BIM within Jacobs UK highways business. He is responsible for implementation of a consistent approach to our BIM workflows and standard methods and procedures across the Jacobs UK highways business.

Stephen has been instrumental in developing Jacobs BIM deployment procedures for major highways projects and was a key member of the team on Jacobs first major scheme developed fully within a BIM environment to construction.

Ian Bellamy

My name is Ian Bellamy. I’m currently working as a Technical Specialist at Jacobs Engineering in the UK, my primary role is Research and Development of new software and creation of workflows to establish if it is useable on our projects and bring additional value to our clients.

My roles prior to this were, Highways CAD Draughter, then a Highways design Engineer. As a draughter, I was responsible for delivering drawings on the projects.

Once I completed university (which I attended part time whilst working) I became a designer and started to undertake design work, this included, the design of Junctions including roundabouts, and the links between these junctions.

I primarily learned how to design using non Autodesk design software. When we transferred to using Civil 3D, our main BIM enabling Highways Design tool. The transition was easier for me than most as I had a background as a AutoCAD user.
