This course will present inventive techniques and methods, using Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the review of the building envelope. A key focus of the presentation will be the highlighting of how structural systems interact with the enclosure system. It will focus on topics such as the Level of Development (LOD) of architectural models and structural design models and how these progress into fabrication-level models for the building envelope in products such as Inventor software and Revit Architecture software with the structural system, interacting with products such as Revit Structure software and Advance Steel software. Key areas of this will be looking at localized high-level-of-development models around transitions of buildings, and will show how systems are brought together and used in a building-enclosure review meeting, as well as the importance of integrating both structure and building envelope as holistic systems as part of the review process.

Will Ikerd (PE, CM-BIM, LEED AP) is principal at IKERD Consulting, LLC, an internationally recognized consulting group in buildings, civil and industrial construction markets specializing in using Building Information Modeling (BIM)-enabled Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). He serves as an expert consultant in design and construction cases involving BIM and VDC processes. He currently chairs both the Designers Forum of the Associated General Contractors’ (AGC) national BIM Forum and the Structural Engineering Institute’s national BIM Committee. He has won the Best Speaker award twice from the International Structures conference, and he was named in Structural Engineering magazine’s 2010 “Top 10 Leaders in Structural Engineering,” Glass Magazine’s 2009 “Top 30 under 40,” and Building Design & Construction magazine’s 2011 “Top 40 Under 40.”
This lab will focus on getting started with Autodesk Nastran In-CAD software inside of Inventor 2016 software. Participants should have an understanding of finite element analysis (FEA) and the preferred participants are currently using FEA in their jobs. We will explore the Ribbon, Browser, and different analysis types. We will have a few workflows for basic users that are looking to crest the initial hurdle when learning new software, as well as a few examples for the more advanced users who are familiar with FEA software.
