Description

The cost and duration of communicating design intent for substation relocation and pad-mounted transformer replacements has typically been prohibitive and can lack the visualization needed for all types of stakeholders. The typical utility has many instances in which stakeholder and municipal approval may be required to move on to the next phase of the project. With the new approach using 3D reality capture, it has never been easier for utilities to gather 3D models and integrate them into photorealistic site designs for better stakeholder visualization and approval. This 90-minute lab will provide engineers, planners, and business users in electric utilities with the tools they need to create a comprehensive 3D model of a small substation based on 2D geographic information system (GIS) data gathered from various database and file sources; 3D terrain models; LiDAR (light detection and ranging) site scans; ReCap 360 software projects of existing infrastructure; and 3D designs from AutoCAD Utility Design software.

Stephen Brockwell

Stephen Brockwell founded Brockwell IT Consulting in 2007 to provide independent business and technical leadership for the Autodesk, Inc., geospatial community. Stephen worked for Autodesk from 1999 to 2007 as senior business development manager, senior technical account manager, and director of product management. He played a key role in successful projects at FirstEnergy Corporation; Qwest Communications International, Inc.; City of Vancouver; and Telstra Enterprise. Prior to joining Autodesk, Stephen was the software engineering manager for SHL VISION* Solutions, the developers of the first all-relational geographic information system based on Oracle, and customers such as Qwest and First Energy still use this underlying technology. Stephen has an MSc in mathematics, a BSc in computer science, and 22 years of experience in the geospatial industry in government and private sector and technology. Stephen has been a regular instructor at Autodesk University and has presented at Oracle Open World and the Oracle Spatial User’s Conference.

Frank Misurec has over 20 years of experience in the information technology industry, serving as a solution architect, developer, trainer, and leader. He has more than 15 years of experience as an international geospatial consultant to telecommunications, utilities, and municipal governments. Frank has a proven record of success in managing and implementing software systems that model and maintain utility infrastructure, support the design process, streamline business processes, and integrate diverse systems. Frank is an expert in building business-focused applications utilizing the Autodesk, Inc., suite of products that includes MapGuide software, AutoCAD Map 3D software, Topobase Client software, and AutoCAD Utility Design software. Frank has a BMath in applied mathematics and computer science from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
