In this class attendees will learn how to integrate 2D and 3D modeling within a multidimensional project. Specific focuses will include incorporating 2D line work from AutoCAD software into orthographic views within AutoCAD Plant 3D software and importing an AutoCAD Plant 3D software model into a 2D design environment. Both procedures require verbal and graphical coordination, layer control, and specific layer naming conventions to assist in the production of 2D plan views, drawing sets, and manipulation of object visibility in live section cuts. Topics will include developing solutions utilizing both forms of design, integrating various software programs and disciplines to maximize modeling performance and behavior, developing a systematic approach to integrating 2D and 3D models, and resolving conflicts that may arise. We will also cover file creation and management required for project setup. This advanced knowledge is beneficial to designers, engineers, and project managers who work on 2D/3D design projects.

Julian Chavez is an engineering designer providing intelligent-design solutions and support within the Colorado offices of AECOM Technology Corporation. Julian supports real-time design using AutoCAD Design Suites software for multiple practices, including oil and gas and mining process engineering, civil works, and structural. Julian is an AutoCAD Certified Professional with more than 16 years of experience. His vast knowledge has enabled him to provide training and support within his field for the past 6 years. Julian’s approach to teaching and public speaking creates a comfortable and productive learning environment. He has presented to clients and peers from all disciplines, ranging from groups of 5 people to those including 80 people. AECOM is a global provider of professional technical and management support services to a broad range of markets, including transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water, and government.
Daniel Cavanaugh received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from University of Colorado, Denver. He is now a practicing electrical, instrumentation & controls engineer at Carollo Engineers — an environmental engineering firm specializing in the planning, design, and construction management of water and wastewater facilities for municipal and public sector clients in the United States. Daniel has 4 years of experience designing instrumentation and control systems for a wide variety of plant and process projects for the mining and oil and gas industries. He provides Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation, SQL server project database integration, and training for the corporation’s computer-aided engineering design software, including AutoCAD Plant 3D software, AutoCAD P&ID software, Elecdes Design Suite software, Instrument manager software, and more. Based in Denver, Colorado, this is Daniel’s second visit to Autodesk University.

This presentation will walk you through the journey a natural gas company took implementing AutoCAD Plant 3D plant design software. We will examine the various steps involving your reseller—Autodesk Consultants—along with internal IT resources to better ensure a successful implementation. We will show you a specific pilot project and its journey through a Building Information Modeling (BIM) project life cycle. We will also touch on some additional applications—like AutoCAD P&ID software, Navisworks software, and BIM 360 Glue software—which enhanced our BIM project life cycle. Developing a 3D model of a part or assembly may be accomplished with standard computer resources. However, modeling a large plant can quickly become taxing on most computers and make rendering the full model problematic. As such, reducing the model to subassemblies may increase the performance and rendering time. But what governs the break point when defining a subassembly? And what about other aspects of facility modeling, such as civil, or architectural feature sets? During this roundtable discussion, we will explore the various aspects of properly managing a plant model, and share insights on the best practices for bringing everything together to complete the model. This class will show how you start with a simple report and then start grouping and ordering it in the way you need. You will learn how to define the classes you want to use for your report and how to lay out your report. First, this class will explain why we need data from the database when acquisition rules won’t do it. You will hear about the limitations of acquisition rules, and you’ll see several examples of how data can flow between AutoCAD P&ID software objects. We will also explain why customers needed the various data flows for their daily work. You will see examples of data flowing between instruments, even if those instruments are in different AutoCAD P&ID drawings. And we will show how the Views in your AutoCAD P&ID database look, and how you can use them in your AutoCAD P&ID drawing with PlantLink so the data actually flow. This class will cover workflow process for laser scanning utilizing Z&F scanner, ReCap Ultimate software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, and Navisworks software. You will learn how to use laser scanning and ReCap software in a real-world retrofit project show, and you’ll gain some timesaving ideas about getting scan data into AutoCAD Plant 3D software and working directly inside the point cloud. You will learn how to get this done with no third-party applications and using only ReCap software, Navisworks software, and AutoCAD Plant 3D software. When you work in environments like chemical plants—which are normally small scan jobs and quick turnaround maintenance types of jobs—using ReCap software and AutoCAD Plant 3D software together can greatly reduce design time and help eliminate construction issues after the design has been completed.
