3ds Max software offers many different toolsets and workflows that facilitate fast turnaround and short deadlines. In this session, we will explore several different feature sets that users of all skill levels and industry types can use. Specifics will include the easy bringing in of 3D data from other applications and the simple application of material shaders for photoreal and non-photorealistic (NPR) renderings and template-based lighting setups. Additional topics will include the use of the new Max Creation Graph editor for parametric/procedural modeling and animation, as well as several different options for rapid output, including Autodesk 360 cloud rendering. This session is aimed at all user levels and industries with an emphasis on fast turnaround.
Originally schooled as a fine artist in photography and animation, Gary M. Davis has been involved in providing computer graphics for television, film, games, and architectural visualization for over 20 years. He has authored several books and has lectured at numerous industry conferences, including Game Developers Conference, National Association of Broadcasters conference, SigGraph, and Autodesk University. At SigGraph 2007 Gary was named a 3ds Max Master, and shortly thereafter he joined Autodesk, Inc., as a technical specialist with Media & Entertainment. Most people are now familiar with a concept of level of detail and levels of information. Data and geometry have their benefits but when combined they become even more powerful. Stick time (4D) into the mix and we're starting to get somewhere. Get the models to a ‘Fit for Construction’ and you’ve cracked it. The aim of the presentation is to follow the data and the geometry from the design phase right through to construction on-site. To demonstrate how structured data and geometry when properly verified can be leveraged by design, planning, and through to on-site construction to ensure the project is delivered successfully. Throughout the levels of detail what do the various parties need? What does a planner want a level 3 model for? How much use is a level 1 model to a QS? What is the minimum amount of data they need? We will go through their requirements for successful delivery and demonstrate how they are leveraging the data and geometry day to day on the Hinkley project.

How can 120 diverse stakeholders shape the design of a complex infrastructure project and gain community consent and agency approval—all in record time? Using InfraWorks 360 software as a collaboration tool, the owners, engineers, environmentalists, historians, regulators, news agencies, and local townspeople all worked together to affect design changes in a democratized and efficient working relationship. Using InfraWorks 360 software, we overcame the obstacles that typically plague rail projects, such as connecting villages and towns, crossing bridges and tunnels, using and repurposing existing corridors, and establishing new alignments. This was done using the ability to rapidly view, navigate, query, and create design alternatives in a real-world context. The project model provided a single source of truth for both technical and nontechnical review, assessment, and “what if” proposals. InfraWorks 360 software has tremendous potential for planners and architects. In this era of big open data and the integration of the Internet of Things with the built environment, municipal governments must find new ways to use this growing wealth of information to improve civic engagement, promote economic development and entrepreneurship, and make data-driven decisions. From this perspective, InfraWorks 360 software can not only create a unified platform for all of this data, but also visualize it in 3D, combining all your Revit (RVT) files into a single model, rendering in real time, and running various analyses. This class will use real-world examples to look at all of the features around district planning, transportation infrastructure projects, and airports. We will also walk through how to create and test the impact of various design scenarios and then share those with project stakeholders. Starting in InfraWorks 360 software, we will create paths using InfraWorks 360 road tools, specifically design and component roads. We will then use AutoCAD Civil 3D software to convert imported InfraWorks 360 alignment(s) to Feature Lines, and create individual paths for vehicle movement: a single center-line path, merging lanes, and a bus turnout. In 3ds Max software we will use the Civil View extension to assign vehicles to imported paths, set speed, direction, vehicle type, starts, stops, and so on. Back in InfraWorks 360 software, we will import and configure the animation file(s), account for transformation shift on import, and watch as our vehicles “drive” the model. The round-trip of data will flow like this: InfraWorks 360 to AutoCAD Civil 3D to 3ds Max plus Civil View back to InfraWorks 360. This session features InfraWorks 360, 3ds Max, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
This roundtable will focus on different available virtual-reality (VR) hardware options, with the purpose of implementing VR into architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) workflows. We will have an in-depth discussion both about the tethered VR options like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, as well as about more-affordable mobile options like the Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard, and others. Every VR platform has strengths and weaknesses. We will discuss which VR platforms perform best paired with specific workflows for optimal end results. We will discuss everything from setting up and optimizing the VR hardware and available accessories to desktop/laptop/mobile requirements and hardware specifications needed to ensure an optimal AEC-VR experience. We will showcase different ways we use VR in the AEC industry, paired with appropriate hardware. VR can realize major savings in various VR workflows that include 360 renderings, VR walk-throughs, existing conditions exploration, virtual mockups, and many others.
