Managing bulk materials is one of the most important functions for mining companies. The value of the business is dependent on the quantity of minerals in the stockpile. Yet, it is challenging to know the volume at any specific point in time because material is continually being added or subtracted. Companies currently use aerial surveys to do this work. However, due to its expense, it can only be done about one time per month. Alternatively, the companies can utilize ground survey crews or terrestrial scanning. But, the safety issues and the quality of the data are concerns. In this course, we will demonstrate how to use an unmanned aircraft to conduct accurate surveys that can be conducted daily to give managers near real-time information with which to make decisions. We will discuss critical mission workflows, doing photogrammetric processing with Autodesk ReCap 360 and volume calculations with Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Currently, Jeff is the Program Manager for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) at the University of Colorado at Denver. In this role, he directs the research agenda for remote sensing and the development of UAS applications, where he is primarily interested in land management and natural resource extraction. In addition to his role at the University, Jeff consults businesses to help them build mission-specific workflows that maximize their return on investment. A graduate of the prestigious Daniels College of Business, at the University of Denver, Jeff possesses fifteen years of experience conducting strategic business development and program management for commercial startup companies. His skill set in unmanned systems, solutions engineering, geomatics and logistics bring success through execution of strategic imperatives. Jeff is intensely committed to empowering clients with innovative efficiencies, and helping them achieve technical and economic success. Today, his work and research focuses on UAS integration. He established a highly controlled testing facility and authored an airworthiness testing process for Unmanned Aircraft. He writes applications for Certificates of Authorization and is considered an expert with FAA regulation of UAS. In 2014, Jeff cofounded a technical user group for UAS professionals in the Rocky Mountain Region, where he serves as a director. And he's worked closely with the Department of Interior identifying UAS applications for Federal land management.
Dave Henderson is the Director of Sales, Geospatial Solutions for Topcon Positioning Systems; the worldwide leading developer and manufacturer of precision positioning equipment for GNSS systems, surveying, mapping and machine control products. Henderson's career in the positioning business spans more than 30 years. Prior to joining Topcon Positioning Systems, Dave held several industry positions as a District & Regional Sales Manager of Surveying, GPS & GIS mapping products. Dave is currently involved in two Autodesk projects using vehicle mobile mapping to capture geospatial LiDAR and imaging data that will assist engineer design teams and city agencies in the design build process. Creating these scenes with the help of a UAV is becoming more common as the flying camera UAV craze explodes worldwide. Join Autodesk, Inc.'s, Field Innovation Team members as we discuss some ins and outs of generating precise scenes with the help of a UAV. This session will cover camera equipment and UAVs, and we'll also discuss building custom UAVs, taking pictures from a UAV, processing pictures with Photo on ReCap software, breaking larger scenes up into smaller samples, and combining the results into AutoCAD Civil 3D software or InfraWorks software.
