This workshop will provide an introduction to lean design and construction concepts. It will highlight the benefits and opportunities that lean implementation provides, and it will give the participants a road map showing how to start using these principles on projects. Lean in design and construction focuses primarily on project improvement by identifying and eliminating waste and enhancing value to the customer. This workshop will not only familiarize the participants with lean vocabulary, but it will also provide them with a roadmap to understand how to employ these concepts in their organizations and on their projects. We will also review a cloud-based tool that helps facilitate this production planning and last planner process.
Tom Feliz joined Autodesk, Inc., in May 2014 as part of an acquisition. His current role is to gauge and increase customer engagement of the BIM 360 design suite family across the Autodesk portfolio in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Throughout his career Tom has been responsible for driving lean practices and principles into construction projects by capitalizing on technology. He has also acted as a project coach, specializing in process improvement through the integration and application of lean tools and principles on construction projects and teams. He brings with him a unique background and skill set that enables him to understand the intricacies of lean principles in a project-based setting. Tom has engaged as the lean champion onsite working for general contractors and owners on large-scale lean integrated projects. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University in industrial engineering. He then went on to attain a master of science degree in civil engineering with a focus on construction management.
Rebecca Bettler is the National Director of Lean Construction with JE Dunn Construction. She serves as a liaison, trainer and coach for employees and building partners implementing Lean practices and behaviors. She has been in the construction industry for 18 years and began her Lean journey in 2006. Prior to JE Dunn, Rebecca spent more than five years consulting on the application of Lean principles in various organizations and project types. This includes working with owners, architects, contractors and engineers, Integrated Project Delivery teams, leading strategic planning sessions, implementing Last Planner® System and various other Lean practices. In addition to being an active member of the Lean Construction Institute and the chair of LCI's Education Committee, she is also a Master Trainer of the Choosing by Advantages Decisionmaking System. Rebecca holds a degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.
Follow the information as it traverses the construction project lifecycle from design to build to operations. Participants will learn how to link their Building Information Modeling (BIM) from authoring tools such as AutoCAD software and Revit software to BIM 360 Glue software for design coordination, then to BIM 360 Field software for construction field execution. We will then review options for outputting information for operations and maintenance.
The Millennium Falcon really is a heap of junk. Well, it was when Han bought it from Lando; it took a lot of work to refurbish it so that it could do the Kessel run so quickly. Using point clouds, Point Layout software, BIM 360 Field software, and BIM 360 Glue software, Han and Chewie managed to get the restoration turned around in less time than anyone had turned around a rust-bucket spaceship before—and to a higher quality with all the documentation and testing recorded for reference whenever the hyperdrive didn't kick in. This class will echo the workflows in real life from renovation to moving and from the end of construction to handover into facilities management. This will be a tongue-in-cheek class with much of the humor of the 2012 Autodesk University class, Building the Death Star the Autodesk Way.
This engaging class is aimed at construction managers, quality managers, and executives from construction service providers who are evaluating the financial impact of Cloud and Mobile Construction Solutions, such as BIM 360 Field software and BIM 360 Glue software. We will explore a detailed and proven analysis tool for collecting project data and then analyzing and quantifying benefits. We will ask attendees to consider a hypothetical $100 million building project as a tangible example, and we will collect inputs from the audience to foster a collaborative discussion. We will then use the results to estimate a return on investment. Real-world metrics from existing projects and case studies will support each step of the process. The methodology can benefit construction professionals who are already using BIM 360 software on their projects and want to understand how the tools affect their key results areas; prospective users of BIM 360 software can also begin to consider which project areas would benefit from these new technologies.
Great, you've taken the keys to your brand new facility and you are ready to roll. But wait, you have also received an as- built model and load of data. So, how does this help you drive away your brand new facility? The next stage after you receive the keys is that facility now needs to earn its keep and be maintained. Let's take a look at how BIM 360 Field and Glue could be used to help maintain the facility using the data collected from the construction phase. What do owners and operators need to know about the model and the associated data? And, how can they benefit from it, using the same tools as the builders who created it. This course will examine some every day scenarios to build a case that BIM 360 Field and Glue can still benefit the project, even after you have lost your first set of keys.
