Autodesk Revit software 3D models contain rich data that is important to builders. Getting all the data, geometry, object properties, and custom parameters out of the unique data structure of Revit remains a challenge. Builders are often given models that have not been developed with their input and contain object property information that is incomplete, inaccurate, or generic. In this class, we will demonstrate how all data from Revit can be extracted quickly, enabling model quality assessment prior to performing 4D simulation, clash detection, and 5D estimating. In addition, you will learn to push new data into Revit, to better manage and comprehend Revit data as the model progresses in development, and to use techniques for model variance analysis and trends. The class will also cover strategies, workflows, and best practices for creating Revit templates that optimize data extraction and enable Revit objects to be mapped to external databases or to be further manipulated for additional analysis.

In this class, we will present perspectives and practical examples from our work on implementing an innovative approach to the construction, commissioning, handover, and lifecycle management processes for a facility. Consigli, the contractor on the project, is closely working with BRG, the building owner’s workplace management consultant. The project team mapped the owner's information needs from operations backwards into the construction and commissioning process, then implemented a set of technologies to deliver on this information flow. Key technologies in use include cloud- and iPad®-based field management software from Vela Systems®, Autodesk® Navisworks®, Autodesk® Revit®, and ARCHIBUS IWMS software. This class will explore each speaker's perspective on how this comprehensive approach to gathering and managing key systems and facilities data has changed both the process of delivering the project as well as the ultimate deliverable to the owner.
Contemporary shifts in technology and environmental concerns are changing the circumstances of building performance. Integrated teams that employ interdisciplinary design and construction personnel are responding to this changed set of conditions. The foundation of interdisciplinary architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) practices begins with the education of the next generation of AEC practitioners. In this class, we will discuss how students engaged in an iterative design and learning process build knowledge and communication skills toward an integrated design-build studio. This integrated design-build studio uses a series of assignments housed in dedicated design labs where students solve realistic design problems. Faculty-implemented Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies and established ecological accounting methods increase interaction and innovation in the interdisciplinary design-build studio.

Perhaps you have heard that stairs and railings in Autodesk Revit 2013 software have gotten some significant new features. It's true! Stairs and railings sport many new features in this release. In this class, we will focus on a few new areas that should have an immediate positive effect on your stair and railing modeling workflow. Many commercial buildings include overlapping stairs, such as overlapping egress stairs. Using the new component-based stair, we will explore how we can now create an overlapping stair. Revit 2013 gives us ways to achieve such a stair without the common workarounds. With the new railing features, we can create handrails that include parametric railing extensions. Furthermore, handrails can now have true supports and returns (not balusters masquerading as supports). Stairs and railings are likely to remain an active area of development in future Revit releases, but don't let this stop you from exploring the many exciting possibilities that Revit 2013 presents right now.
