Maybe you know the power of Revit software’s Family Editor but you’ve avoided it or it has intimidated you until now. Wait no more. This session will introduce you to the basics of Family Editor. Once you get past being intimidated, you will find that while Family Editor is extremely powerful, it can actually be great fun. In this short introduction to Family Editor, we will create a Revit component family complete with constraints and parameters. Don’t worry if you don’t know what a constraint or parameter is—we’ll cover that too. Whether you’ve never worked in Revit software before, or you’ve used Revit software for a while but you’ve simply avoided Family Editor, this class will teach you the basics of the family editor in a simple step-by-step fashion. (The session uses architectural examples, but the concepts apply to all of the flavors of Revit software, including Revit LT software.)

If you've ever designed the zoning of a building, any building, you know that functionality of spaces can be more important than anything. The more standardized operation and maintenance is, the more organized are the set of rules you have to take into consideration. Examples have been given in the past regarding stadiums, airports, and terminal stations. Generative design is the way of translating into computer language that which happens in your mind: a set of conditions that needs to be respected in order for your project to work. A hotel room is one of those distinctively rule-based spaces—there are a group of standardized key factors that govern its exact configuration. Once you determine those rules, you can use them to create the framework for a rapid generative exploration of alternatives, highlight discordances rapidly between brief expectations and the given boundaries, and check and double-check your ideas against operational routines. This lab will cover the interoperability workflows that enable teams to use the right tool for the phase of design and each team member’s expertise and skill sets, enabling their imagination to be the limit of their designs rather than the required toolsets. We will cover 2 different methods for importing geometry into Revit software as native content to produce drawings. With the first method, attendees will learn how to use FormIt 360 software to translate SketchUp models into native Revit content. In the second, attendees will be provided with and instructed on how to apply a premade, easy-to-use Dynamo script that will enable importing Rhino software-generated geometry into Revit native content. The techniques in this lab have been developed and tested on a range of project scales, from large transit projects to residential high-rises to small tenant improvement projects with overwhelming success and quantifiable increases in team productivity and efficiency. Modeling strategy is the key to the success of a project, especially a megaproject. This is a case study of a project with 9 plots. Each plot has a podium and more than 3 towers on top of it. As a multifamily residential project, the design is based on typical unit types and prototype floors repeatedly placed on levels of the towers. With more than 40 structures, more than 30 unit types, and more than 20 prototypes, floor plans are scattered in more than 30 towers across the entire site. How can we manage a project with so many models linked together? How can we maintain numerous unit types and prototype floors as design keeps changing during the design process and development? Having worked to introduce and expand Revit software into many different offices, I have often found there is a “soft spot” for the introduction, made up of individuals wanting to learn and use Revit software. There is also a typical progression into different phases of projects, usually starting with design development, which is typically regarded as “appropriate” for Revit software. While getting this initial implementation is important, it is trickier to increase the use of Revit software by other staff less willing to give up their tools, either in early stages of design or in the more technical later stages. I have developed a variety of presentations, workshops, and strategies that have helped to increase Revit software use throughout the office and throughout project stages. This also provides the additional benefit of increasing everyone's capabilities in our central building design and development software, and it creates an environment of sharing and creation.

You will gain valuable tips, tricks, and time-proven techniques to make your drawings look great. You’ll learn to enhance nonrendered and rendered views with “out of the box” advanced graphic techniques, as well as how to visually improve trees, plants, and people used in Revit software for nonrendered views. You will learn more about adding photo backgrounds to renderings using a unique overlay approach, adding fully controllable gradient color (or photo) background behind multiple views, and you will gain tips for improving interior and exterior rendered views. You may have heard that the only way to switch to using Revit is to just dive right in and take the plunge. Well maybe there are options to this “sink or swim” approach. How do you re-train your staff? Who should learn (or not learn) Revit? How can AutoCAD fit into a Revit office. This discussion will help answer some of your questions and address some of your fears. We will share with one another how switching to Revit has affected our office, workflow, staffing and efficiency.
