3ds Max software offers many different toolsets and workflows that facilitate fast turnaround and short deadlines. In this session, we will explore several different feature sets that users of all skill levels and industry types can use. Specifics will include the easy bringing in of 3D data from other applications and the simple application of material shaders for photoreal and non-photorealistic (NPR) renderings and template-based lighting setups. Additional topics will include the use of the new Max Creation Graph editor for parametric/procedural modeling and animation, as well as several different options for rapid output, including Autodesk 360 cloud rendering. This session is aimed at all user levels and industries with an emphasis on fast turnaround.
Originally schooled as a fine artist in photography and animation, Gary M. Davis has been involved in providing computer graphics for television, film, games, and architectural visualization for over 20 years. He has authored several books and has lectured at numerous industry conferences, including Game Developers Conference, National Association of Broadcasters conference, SigGraph, and Autodesk University. At SigGraph 2007 Gary was named a 3ds Max Master, and shortly thereafter he joined Autodesk, Inc., as a technical specialist with Media & Entertainment. This course will show designers, architects, and engineers how to make better and more-appealing animations for visualization, architecture, and design. Taught by an animation-industry veteran, this fast-moving presentation will take the basic principles of animation and use them to demonstrate ways to make your animations more visually appealing and easier to understand. The course will cover such topics as the importance of design and layout and the importance of storytelling, and we’ll discuss maintaining proper timing and adding weight. We will also cover technical topics such as animation curves, motion paths, and procedural animation, but in a non-software-specific way to make the topics and processes accessible to all. InfraWorks 360 software has tremendous potential for planners and architects. In this era of big open data and the integration of the Internet of Things with the built environment, municipal governments must find new ways to use this growing wealth of information to improve civic engagement, promote economic development and entrepreneurship, and make data-driven decisions. From this perspective, InfraWorks 360 software can not only create a unified platform for all of this data, but also visualize it in 3D, combining all your Revit (RVT) files into a single model, rendering in real time, and running various analyses. Roadway designs are complex, detailed, and huge, geographically speaking. This course will show methods for managing large-scale roadway projects in 3ds Max software with a focus on keeping file sizes as small as possible. This class will discuss using the 3ds Max software development kit (SDK) for automating common tasks within 3ds Max software. We will spend time discussing the .NET API and the Python environments, and we’ll compare them both. The Python SDK is using a newer API called MaxPlus, but it is not fully exposing the C++ API. While .NET API is exposing most of the C++ API, it can sometimes be more difficult to work with. We will compare them and show techniques for automating common tasks, and creating user interfaces to control your tools. This session features 3ds Max. AIA Approved
This class is intended for architectural visualizers and visual-effects artists alike. It aims to demonstrate Factory Fifteen’s unique position between these 2 industries by showcasing 2 projects—a proof-of-concept science-fiction drama, and a film showcasing a stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Attendees will learn how Factory Fifteen’s work in film has cross-pollinated the firm’s work with architects, creating new digital workflows and sensibilities toward “selling architecture.” As well as providing an overview, the speaker will go in detail into the filming and 3D post-production (using 3ds Max software and V-Ray) of one hero shot from each project, as well as illustrating planning and execution at every stage. The first shot involves the design, build, and animation of a mechanical robot and its integration into film footage. Shot 2 involves an elaborate time-lapse sequence over 8 years within a World Cup stadium, from tournament mode to legacy mode, dramatically replacing footage with an evolving digital sequence that leads us to the year 2030. Lighting is often viewed as one of the most complex topics in 3D rendering. Lights are technically simple to use, but without the theory behind, one might feel lost. In this class, attendees will learn basic techniques that will help them achieve well-balanced and photorealistic-looking renders. Attendees will receive point-to-point guidance that will help with the lighting process of any scene. Building on last year’s presentation, the speaker will provide a quick summary of the previously explored topics, including the concept of light hierarchy. Furthermore, attendees will learn how to balance the exposure of a scene that has both interior and exterior lighting. To help understand common lighting mistakes, the class will analyze a couple of badly lit scenes, find errors, and learn how to fix them. The class will go through the different steps of developments of a virtual-reality (VR) experience applied to the field of architecture and real estate. The class will discuss planning, scripting, storyboarding, prototyping, shooting for VR content, shooting aerial content for VR, producing 3D computer-generated content, and tracking live-action spherical content for VR. We’ll also discuss visual effects, compositing, and post-production for VR content. We’ll cover the planning and implementation of the experience—the distribution of the experience. Can it help clients to better understand their sites, their designs, the directions, and their companies’ impacts on the communities? Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has given the artist an exceptionally unique tool for storytelling. Elevating our view from ground level gives us a chance to show architecture both in scale and context. This interactive discussion will begin with a brief introduction to examples of the types and applications of UAVs used in architectural storytelling. After discussing how the various class attendees use UAVs in storytelling, we will talk about best practices in craft operation and in storytelling techniques. We will then wrap up by collaborating on how the various class attendees work in post-production with the footage. This session features 3ds Max and Revit.
