Class Description

Completely rewritten for 2010, this highly popular installation guide is your single source for installing, configuring, tweaking and automating installations of AutoCAD Architecture. We will not only cover all aspects of creating Deployments, but learn how to design and implement a complete turnkey solution for incorporating a heavily customized corporate environment into your ACA installations. You will learn how to "hack" your Deployments to automatically install additional programs, and we'll investigate advanced methods of creating a template user environment that can be applied to all new installations. We will learn advanced techniques for creating fully "roamable" user profiles, which can be used across multiple machines and offices. We will then create a set of simple but powerful installation scripts that will automate ACA installations, complete with a fully customized environment in place.

Key Learning

  • Inside AutoCAD Architecture 2010 Deployments
  • AutoCAD Architecture Customization Strategies and Techniques
  • Creating Template User Environments
  • Inner Secrets of AutoCAD Architecture User Profiles
  • Automating Installations with Simple Scripts

Matthew, I noticed today that handouts are now available for many of the 2009 classes. Will you be making one available for download soon? 11-19-2009 10:57AM

Anthony, Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately I'm running behind schedule on getting my AU paper done and posted. It's about 70 pages long and I recently hit a minor roadblock and have to test and rewrite a section. I should be done by this weekend; if you would like I can email it to you directly. Please let me know you email address. Thanks again, Matt Stachoni 11-19-2009 12:26PM

Matthew, I have spoken with you before and have successfully implemented the custom install A-Z as was described in the 2008 class. I am extremely interested in creating the installation for ACA 2010. However, I have had some difficulty getting additional apps to load with editing the INI file. I have noticed some big differences in the new INI file. Can you tell me what the key is to doing this with 2010 successfully? 10-20-2009 11:37AM

Anthony, Thank you for your interest in the 2008 class. I am teaching it again at AU 2009 for AutoCAD Architecture 2010, and as you have noticed, there are a lot of differences to contend with. The big one was how Autodesk modified the behavior of the .INI file, to the extent that I cannot recommend using it to install additional applications (e.g., the Object Enablers). Additionally, some 3rd party apps require a working ACA user profile when installed, which may not be the case if installed within the INI. Instead, I recommend placing the commands to install the executables in a "postinstall" batch file which is processed last. With .MSI installers, you can install the applications using the "msiexec.exe" program which supports options like silent installations, no reboot when complete, and so on. Thanks again, Matt 10-20-2009 12:48PM

Thank you Matt, I skipped through that part of the customization and all else seems to be going well so far. Also, I just read an Autodesk Discussion in which you suggested using Find & Replace on the XML files of the tool palettes. This should save me a boat load of time. Thank you! The 2008 class was invaluable! I look forward to seeing you this year in Vegas! 10-21-2009 3:03PM
