Structural engineers, programmers, designers, and drafting managers

Class Description

The class will discuss customizing Revit Structure 2009 to solve problems in structural engineering practice. After completing this course the attendees will have an understanding of major design problems that can be solved using automation in Revit Structure, and how to evaluate a structural design problem for automation. They will be able to create a clear set of steps to problem solution, gather the necessary input data from the Revit model and user, and then produce a solution and display the results. Attendees will also understand the availability of design tables and data from major industry sources for use in automation software. Practical examples of tools for steel and reinforced concrete design (developed by the instructors) will be demonstrated.

Class Highlights

  • Overview of design and model development in structural engineering practice

  • Discussion of key engineering problems that can be solved within the BIM model

  • Selecting an appropriate automation task

  • Creating an automatable algorithm

  • Extracting data from the model

  • Gathering data from user

  • Accessing needed design data

  • Automating your algorithm

yes, thanks....i asked because i prefer a IDE including in AutoCAD (or Revit)... and not to work with two separated applications....for example...for me is better work with VBA for AutoCad, and not with VB6.0 + AutoCad. But, as you say, both have advantages...with VBA is better to do a Drawing, but with VB6 is better to manipulate a DataBase. Now, I'm interesting in VSTA and i will follow your classes... thanks again... 07-21-2009 2:31PM

.Why to use VisualSutio2008Express and not VSTA including in Revit ??? I think visual studio 2008 is better than 2005. very good class, thanks... 07-16-2009 9:32AM

That's a reasonable question. It's the same RevitAPI either way, so almost everything we cover will be applicable to VSTA as well as Visual Studio development. The only reason I prefer the Visual Studio approach is it doesn't require something extra installed with Revit, and (I think) it's easier to deploy applications to many systems in a corporate environment. I think of VSTA "macros" as being a great tool for an individual to make their own job easier. There are advantages to both, for sure. I just prefer the cleaner seperation of development environment and application. Also, I totally agree that 2008 is a huge improvement over 2005... it's just too bad that 2010 will be out by then. I hate teaching obsolete technology! That answer your question? 07-16-2009 9:52AM
